What was the inspiration for Bolob?
Bolob is Fifi's first released game. With an endless number of endless runner games out there, we wanted Bolob to be a bit easier for players by not having insta-death. But as the game progress it gets quite hairy and challenging. There are some real heart-pumping moments for players that survive long enough to see them! It was also an excuse to make art for a fantastical underwater environment and the critters that live in it.
What are the visual references?
The BBC documentary Blue Planet. Ponyo from Ghibli. Finding Nemo from Pixar.
What were some challenges of developing Bolob?
Coming from AAA games development, we thought it would be a piece of cake to make silly mobile games. Silly us! UI was a total pain in the butt to figure out and took most of the development time. Networking and saving data was also a major challenge. We learned lots through making Bolob and pave the way for future Fifi games.
What are some unique things about the game?
Most high score endless runner games are insta-death. We thought it would be more accessible to the general audience to have multiple chances each run before it's game over. Player can also regain health by picking up Heart items. Another unique feature is our Skin Crafting which extends the gameplay a bit for the player. Playing with specific skins will allow the player to collect unique Artifacts which are then used to craft new skins. The Challenges system is another thing we added near the end to add more tension/reward to Bolob. Some challenges will cost certain amount of coins just to accept. If the player fails to accomplish the challenge, those coins are lost! This risk vs reward mechanic should add some real tension for the players.
4th paragraph: We got the basic gameplay and art mocked up in just 2-3 weeks. But somehow it took over 7 months to launch it! We often joke about changing the Bolob title from “The endless adventure of Bolob” to “The endless development of Bolob”

Will there be new updates?
Of course! We already have a new map in the works. A complete new meta game mode where player will tend a Reef and collect rare creatures. We can't wait for our players to experience it! Also: new enemy creatures, more social and competitive features, consumable items, and stat upgrades for each Bolob type. We hope to keep expanding Bolob to enhance our audience's experience!
